On the 7th of December 2017, Australia became the 26th country to recognise same-sex marriage. Earlier, in November, a RIDICULOUS and EXPENSIVE (over $122m to be precise) postal vote was sent out to Australian’s asking the question “Should the law be changed to allow same-sex couples to marry?”. If your answer is or was “no”, you can stop reading right now because I, as a reasonable human being find no harm in legally allowing 2 people of the same sex to show their commitment to each other in the form of a marriage. Same sex couples have been living together in monogomous relationships for MANY YEARS. You’d be a fool to think they haven’t. There’s no law that says they’re not allowed to do this, so why should there be a law that’s stopping them from simply re-affirming this by way of a marriage?
2 months later and I am still mad beyond all reason that the Australian Government not only wasted tax payers money, but brought every same sex couples relationship into the spotlight and, as if by simply being straight (which I had no choice over, by the way) we have some kind of higher power or a more legitimate say in legislation. I can only imagine the feelings of those Australian’s who felt shamed, less than, and disrespected by our Government who still lives in the early 1900’s.
In the end, we got what should have always been a standard practice in human equality and LOVE WON. Yay! It’s January the 22nd and already, many same sex couples have wed in beautiful ceremonies, surrounded by loved ones. Those couples who have previously wed overseas due to our countries restrictions immediately had their marriage recognised as legal, and I’m sure celebrated in their own way. So, you see, at the end of the day, there’s been nothing but celebration. I haven’t heard any stories of any individuals being affected in a negative way by a law that allows nothing but more love. As ridiculous as it was, it’s over with, and I can’t wait to start planning and desinging the stationery that reflects same sex couples and the beautiful relationships they have with their chosen one.
